Learn to Ollie Higher…FAST!

The Ollie is the most important skateboard trick you will ever learn, skateboarding tricks revolve around this skill. Once you have the normal ollie down solid you can improve it. To improve how high you can ollie, you need to increase how high you can jump. I recommend doing calf raises (standing, raise up on your toes and stay there for 5 seconds, slowly go back down and repeat, doing 5 sets of 10 rep). You will also need to suck up your knees as high as possible and perfect the pop/slide motion of the ollie.

To perfect the pop/slide motion, slide your front foot all the way to the nose of the skateboard where it starts to curve up. This will cause your foot to get caught where it starts to rise. Feel that your foot is not sliding on the board, if you try to move it. This will allow you to propel the board higher in the air.

As you perfect the above pop/slide motion you will be able to cause the skateboard to ollie higher. At this point you will need to start practicing evening out your board in the air by pushing down gently with your front foot.

They say “Practice makes perfect” Right? Yes and No. If you practice the wrong moves you will not see any improvement. Stop what you are doing, check the steps and see what you’re doing wrong. Once you have mastered the steps try jumping over larger and larger objects. Start first with a garden hose, then a 2 x 4, another skateboard standing on its side, and so on.

You can completely master a higher ollie in weeks… just keep practicing!
